A Brief History

Founded because of necessity…

It all began with a university visit with my son, Keegan, when he was in Grade 9. The faculty members at the university, were quick to point out the importance of strong communication skills.

Keegan was excellent in spoken and written English. His main hobby was reading and that gave him an excellent command over the language. What was missing in his life was self-confidence and a positive environment needed to network with kids of his age.

We began a hunt for a solution. I joined Toastmasters (an adult public speaking club) and tried to take him to my meetings. Being 15 years old at the time, he was not allowed to join the club. We decided to take a bold step and start our own Toastmasters “Gavel Club”.

The road was tough. We got information from many but no support by way of resources.

One day at a friend’s party, I expressed my frustrations to a kind face (Jayanthi Iyer). She listened and felt the same way. She roped in a few friends to join our group.

Armed with confidence from my new friend-circle, I sent a letter to the Naperville Public Library requesting a room for the Gavel Club meetings. It took over a month; but we got the meeting room we were looking for.

We started our gavel club as the Kinloch Pride Gavel Club of Naperville, with 4 members.

Today, we are the Plastikeers Gavel Club of Naperville, and our membership fluctuates between 60 and 80 members.

Thanks to all who have supported us along the way.
